Ukulele Blog Post

This week is a big week for the Ukulele. I had my one lesson with a professional teacher, and I did not feel the need to get another.

I can now go from A, to G, to C quite fluently and smoothly. I have the first verse of riptide down with the strumming pattern. This song is difficult as it is the same 3 notes, but it has different strumming patterns throughout. I think that this is the hardest part for me and something I have been working on everyday. I made a cheat-cheat for myself as I am playing what to look at.

I have the notes, the strumming patterns with a U and  D meaning up or down. In Riptide, you go through this pattern 4 times, then 6, etc. So, I have this on a piece of paper in front of me.

I also have found that my finger is really hurting if I play more than 10 minutes a day, which is hard because I still have a long ways to go. I also have arthritis in my hand, which makes the strumming that much more difficult as I am finding my hand is starting to hurt quite fast as I am trying to practice.

This week is also mid-term week for my music growth. I have to take a video of me playing my song. This will be difficult as I do not think I am ready, and I may have set my goal a bit too high with this song as it is much longer than most we had to choose from on https://musicplayonline.com/.

Ukulele Progress

First Lesson

I am so glad I decided to get lessons for my ukulele progress. As midterm approaches, I was feeling really unmotivated and frustrated with my progress. There are so many different aspects of the ukulele you need to work on to be able to play the songs I have chosen; strumming patterns, chord changing, pace to strum, etc. To mention as well, I do not understand how to read music. This makes learning an instrument and a song really difficult. Luckily, my music teacher wrote a way for me to learn Riptide without knowing how to read music.

I am not going to share this on here due to it being his writing and I do not have his consent, but I will explain how this is done for my future teaching.

Because this is a three-chord song, he wrote down each chord, and wrote the strumming patterns in ” U, D, U, D”, meaning up or down for strumming on each note. He also put a line for me to know there is a break. He also put the notes underneath with a picture of where they are on the ukulele, where which finger should go using numbers, and it has helped tremendously. I am thankful for this as I can use this in my future teaching if a student is having difficulty with reading music as well to start out. This is going to take some practice, but I believe I will be pretty close to being able to finish this song. The difficult part is the strumming pattern and pace changes, and going from A to G is difficult. Practice will help every day!

I now know what chords are, where my fingers should be, and how to strum along with this song. I just need to get up to the pace and work on changing the chords quicker with my fingers as this is really difficult for me at this time.

Weekly Reflection #6

Pacific Schoool For Innovation & Inquiry

This was an exciting class. I did not even know this school existed before we had this discussion. I thought that it was fascinating how other types of schools out there that I do not even know about. It reminded me a lot of our philosophy class last semester. I did a project on the Montessori school, which is also a different type of school. I think that it is important to have different types of schools because all children are different and learn differently.

We also learned a lot about inquiry-based learning last semester. We had to make a few different inquiries, and I can see how important it is to learning, especially for children. Like the Montessori school, it gives children the responsibility for their own learning and chooses how they want to learn. I noticed that the Pacific School for Innovation and Inquiry that a lot of the work is done with technology. As a student, I never really dealt with much technology growing up. I think that it is really interesting to see how learning is developing in this decade for children.

I thought that this Ted Talk was extremely intriguing and definitely gave me a different insight on learning. “Learning is not something that comes to us from the inside, but it’s rather something already inside us, a spark that needs to be nurtured and sparked into a flame.” This quote really stuck with me watching this video and learning about this school. Learning truly is something that we all are intrinsically motivated to do but needs to be nurtured by giving students different approaches and ways to satisfy different needs. External sources are important, but getting information from somewhere and actually knowing about it is very different, as Jeff Hopkins said. This class gave me a different view on learning and education in which I will use in my future career.

Lessons

My lesson got cancelled due to the snow..

I have been attempting easier songs with only one chord and strumming along to get the hang of the chords but music is really hard.  https://musicplayonline.com/ukulele/ has many easy songs that I could learn, but I still can’t read music and it is hard!

Learning an instrument is hard. I am going to need these lessons to show any progress in the upcoming weeks before midterm.

Weekly Reflection

The Media Reality

This week’s class was a bit of a wake-up call for a lot of us. This class was so influential to my future career.

It was crazy listening to how unsafe most social media sites are. Information, pictures, anything can be shared without knowing where it is being sent to or posted to what website further. It was a reality check with what I should be posting on social media to protect my identity and career.

https://www.mediatedreality.com/

This website is really important for any future teacher to read. It is so important we protect ourselves, and our students from anything internet-related. The only way we do this is to be educated on privacy settings, privacy rules that may be in place, and protecting our student’s privacy.  I would use this in any job company that uses social media, or anyone applying for a job.

Ukulele Update

Ukulele Week 4

Now that the semester is at full speed, I am finding it hard to find time to teach myself the ukulele. I have now made the decision I am going to get lessons over the reading break to play catch up. I think this will be really useful because I need to learn two songs. I think if I get lessons for the first song, I will easily be able to teach myself the second one having the tools to do so.

I am also trying to teach myself the basics from the website our music professor has provided us with this awesome website. This website is really useful as it provides teachers and students with many music outlooks. It has activities, lessons, beginner songs, tuning, everything a beginner music teacher could learn is on this website. This website will be extremely beneficial to my teaching career for incorporating music into the classroom.

I am going to be getting ukulele lessons from a local shop here in Victoria. I have heard very good things and I am excited to get started with it.

I also have been attempting to teach myself off of youtube. I found a ukulele instructor that is quite helpful and has tutorials of the songs I want to cover.

Although this video is a little advanced for where I am right now musically, after I get my lessons it will be a great tool to master the song with. He also has many other tutorial videos for many different songs for various age groups and genres.

Week 4 Reflection

During this week’s class, we had a guest speaker talk to us about social media and privacy within the education system. I learned so much, to say the least. We learned about how teachers are responsible for keeping their students safety in mind whenever we are taking pictures, videos, or using our phones in the classroom. In my Wednesday visits, my mentor teacher used a website for the student’s families to use. Within this website my mentor teacher posted videos and pictures of the student’s progress, keeping the families updated and involved. I think that this is really important to do and creates an important sense of community. With this being said, I also remember sorting paperwork and seeing one about this website. My mentor teacher made sure to create a paper to be signed on if the parents wanted their children’s picture taken and to be included on this website. I think that this website is really important but also needs to be done properly, as my Wednesday teacher did.

I currently work at a job in child care and I had no idea even taking a video of something and having their voices in the background was a violation of privacy. It was really eye-opening to fully understand the privacy and the expectations that are set for teachers to keep our students safe.

We also learned about what we as educators on social media looks like. It was really interesting to learn that we will definitely be looked up on social media by families and future employers. This was a reality check that I need to make sure my social media is secure and appropriate. It was also interesting to know that whether or not it is private, students, coworkers, employers, and their families will be searching for us on the internet. As I googled myself, I was surprised to see that a few of my social media accounts came up. I will definitely be taking this into consideration for my future.

Ukulele

This week was a really busy week academically. I unfortunately did not have a lot of time to work on my ukulele talents. With that being said, in music class we had to come up with a personalized growth plan. This entials our success over the semester. I have made the decision to learn two songs this semester. One being Chasing Cars by snow patrol, and the other being Riptide by Vance Joy. Both of these songs are going to be challenging, but they are songs that I do enjoy. Hopefully because I enjoy them I will be motivated to learn them more quickly. My goal is to learn one song by mid term, and both of them fluently by the end of the semester. Stay tuned!

Week 3 Reflection

During week 3, we learned about Multimedia Learning Theory / Image, Video, & Audio Editing in this weekly class. This was very interesting to me as I have always struggled with editing pictures, video, and audio.

A big part of my after-school care job is providing the children I care for with sources of drawings, coloring pages, and art. I always struggled with correctly converting these images onto Microsoft word, so seeing how this is done correctly and all the different ways it can be done was beneficial to me.  I also really enjoyed all the images of Bernie. It was a really uplifting class to take some time out of our hectic schedules and have some fun during our class with picture editing.

Knowing how to do this is important for teachers to know because we as educators could make so many engaging yet fun activities for our students to do.

Ukulele Week 1

Slowly but surely this inquiry is coming together. This week I set up a time to pick up my ukelele that I am renting from the University. I am a bit nervous and anxious to teach myself how to play an instrument since I was never really good at it in elementary school when we learned to play the ukulele and the recorder. This inquiry is definitely going to be interesting.

When I got my ukulele I took it home and attempted to tune it off of a sound I was hearing; thus it did not go as planned. I would not say I have a musical ear and this was definitely not the correct route to take if you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing.

Problem-solving 101: I then, using my small but evident technology skills and downloaded an app that when I strum a string, it hears it through my phone and tells me how far off I am from it being in tune, giving me negative and positive numbers. This took me quite some time. Eventually, it is now tuned and ready to go!

I was also looking into taking a lesson or two to help me get the ball rolling..

So, next week I am taking time to figure out different sites that can help me on this journey..

Now to decide what song I am going to learn!
